Lagos State Agency for Mass Literacy,Adult & Non-Formal Education

The Agency for Mass Education was established under the Edict No 5, Volume 24 of 31st January, 1991 (Lagos State Official Gazette) is saddled with the responsibility of eradicating illiteracy to the barest minimum in Lagos State. This was due to a directive of the FGN that States should establish Agencies that will provide literacy Programmes to suit the economic, cultural, social and political needs of the illiterates (youths and adults) in their areas.

Thus, Literacy is a fundamental human right that everyone should benefit from; a right that opens the door to other rights. Literacy aids the individual’s empowerment for social, economic and political integration. Simply put, literacy is the ability to read, write and do simple numeracy.

Essentially, literacy involves a continuum of learning which enables individuals to actualize their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to take full and active part in their community and the larger society.
